Aluminium Pergola on Patio

Can a Pergola Be Built On A Patio?

How to decide whether your patio is suitable for a pergola

So, you're dreaming of adding a touch of elegance and charm to your patio by installing an aluminium pergola. But before you dive headfirst into this project, it's essential to determine whether your patio is suitable for such a structure. Don't worry, though; I'm here to guide you through the process.

First things first, take a good look at your patio's size and layout. Consider the available space and envision how the aluminium pergola will fit in that area.

Measure the dimensions accurately and compare them with the dimensions of the pergola you have in mind. Ensure that there will be enough room for both the pergola itself and any additional furniture or decorations you plan to place under it.

Next, assess the condition of your patio's surface. The integrity of your patio is crucial for a successful installation.

Check for any cracks, uneven spots, or other signs of damage that could compromise its stability. Remember, an aluminium pergola requires a firm foundation to ensure its durability and longevity.

How to prepare an existing patio for a pergola

Now that you have decided to add a pergola to your patio, it's essential to ensure that your existing patio is prepared properly. This step is crucial as it will provide a solid foundation for your aluminium pergola and guarantee its stability and longevity.

Once you have confirmed that your patio can handle the weight of the pergola, it's time to ensure proper anchoring.

This will include installing footings under each leg of your aluminium pergola for added stability and strength. You’ll want to grab a floorplan for the exact model you’ve chosen (we can always provide these for our models) and share that with whoever is laying the footings for under the pergola legs.

You’ll also want to make sure you’re prepared to accommodate any level changes, usually this is as straightforward as using spacers under the pergola legs to combat the natural fall of the patio. If you’re having it installed by us, our installers will manage this.

How to build a new patio for a pergola

If you know you’d like a pergola on your new patio, that hasn’t yet been created – proper preparation makes things nice and easy.

Try not to leave the pergola until last. It’s tempting to say, well I will get the patio down and then work out the pergola afterwards. This can cause you headaches down the line though.

The best thing to do is to choose the pergola you’d like (size and model). Then grab a floorplan for that model and the preparation instructions, and share those with the landscaping team creating your patio. If you choose one of our models, our account management team will work directly with your lanscapers, to make sure it all goes smoothly.
